How a former doctor saves Nigerian women from 'useless husbands'

A former doctor helping trauma patients in a Lagos Emergency hospital has founded a thriving online supermarket business in Lagos, Nigeria that is gaining reputation both locally and internationally. Gloo.ng, Nigeria’s Leading Online Supermarket, was recently featured by CNN International in its African Start-Up segment and has also been featured by Washington Post, BBC World Service and Financial Times of London.

It was also voted No.4 on the list of 20 African Startups to Watch by Mashable—No.1 in Nigeria. Dr. Olumide Olusanya decided to start Gloo.ng to try to cater to Nigeria's busy women with no time to shop at the supermarket. Continue...

"I saw what my wife was going through. I saw the stress; I saw the love and passion of trying to keep up a very happy home, a very happy family, traveling up and down and then (being) busy on a daily basis," says Olusanya. "And then you have me, a husband that is totally useless at cooking or taking care of the house, so you see all this pressure coming on her," he adds. “Gloo.ng is an outpouring of affection to my wife – and by extension, to all our target users – to try to relieve her, and our valued Gloo.ng users, of the stress of this balancing act, partnering with them to build the happiness they want to build into their homes and families, by saving them the precious time, the valuable money and the needless stress spent on the very unnecessary inconvenience of supermarket visits, which they can better spend on activities that promote their happiness, such has spending quality time with their family."
Since then, the company has grown to employ over 15 people, operating from inside a 20,000 square feet warehouse, which they recently moved into from a 5,000 square feet warehouse. Olumide hopes to expand the Gloo.ngbrand all over Nigeria, as more and more Nigerians turn to online shopping.

Please note: Gloo.ng is presently only in Lagos and is expected to roll out to Abuja and Port Harcourt next year. (See www.gloo.ng/faq for more details.)
